Individual Therapy
Life gets hard sometimes. You find yourself struggling with friendships, or family life, or work, or your aging parents, or your health, or a major loss, or something else.
Sometimes all you need is supportive friends. But sometimes the only way to make life work better is to make changes in how you face it. In individual therapy, I help you decide what you want to be different in your life, and then we work together to help you make and sustain those changes. I seek an active collaboration with each client. I bring expertise I've gathered through my research, training and experience, but I try to never forget that my clients' goals, dreams, and beliefs are as important and valuable as my knowledge. We work to put it all together and find solutions to life's challenges and problems, and to find creative and effective ways to reach your full potential.
Sometimes the goal of individual therapy is symptom reduction. You’re tired of feeling anxious or depressed and want to feel better. Sometimes you just need a guide to help you better understand yourself and why you react the way you do to various life events or people. Sometimes you need better insight into a behavior pattern you learned long ago and know you need to change for your relationships to improve.
In any of these cases, I’ll work with you to create the life you want, or to navigate hardship, or to change the way you relate to others.
Depending on your goals, I may ask you to take a closer look at relationships at work or in your personal life, depending on what is making you feel “stuck” or unhappy or nervous. You can’t make other people change, but you can change your own behavior and thus evoke different responses from others. I may ask you to also look more closely at your thoughts, such as beliefs, assumptions, “self-talk,” and interpretations. This process will help you feel like you have more control over your life and your choices, and will most likely lead to more positive feelings and effective actions.
